WHY PRACTICE AIKIDO?
For relaxation? For self defense? Because you like the art and Japanese culture? Are you looking for "the edge" in business? Are you interested in the people who practice Aikido? Do you like the philosophy? Is there some reason related to your family?
Because of the intensity of the workout we are able to alleviate stress in a constructive way. Have you noticed that at the end of a class you almost always feel better than when you arrived? If you continue the practice and study of Aikido for a long period (years) you will see how you life can be of much better quality than you can imagine.
Our students tell us that the classes are their most effective weapon against stress. This is one of the principal reasons why our students continue. So, it is logical to wonder, why take the time and extra expense of attending our clinics and seminars if you already benefit from regular study of the art?
There exist basically 3 types of learning: (1) visual, (2) auditory and (3) kinesthetic (a type of physical learning based on movement and muscular memory.)
All of us learn based on these types of learning. And to a greater or lesser degree we depend on varying combinations of these 3 types. In our culture, people tend to rely on the first two, (visual and auditory.) The third type of learning, kinesthetic, is equally important even though it is rarely recognized. The teachings of Ueshiba Sensei fundamentally rest on a comprehension of the philosophy of the principle of "aiki"; but much of the art can be understood only through the practice of the art, its kinesthetic component.
In the classes offered by Seikikai, we learn by doing. The kinesthetic method is the predominant form of learning. Our students learn through direct experience and the advantage of this method lies in the efficacy of learning Aikido through this technique. The learning of Aikido becomes less theoretic and more practical while still providing a solid philosophical understanding.
Aikido is much more than just another martial art, it is a way of life that has much to offer. Aikido is an art that requires constant practice and effort. It is not an art that can be acquired in 3 easy steps.
You can be sure that the information in our classes is complete and inclusive. So why not make the extra effort to attend one of our clinics or seminars in order to see for yourself?
Aikido is a multi-dimensional art and can only truly be appreciated if approached in a regular and consistent manner. In order to master the art one must approach its study with a deep desire coupled with a consistent attendance. If one wishes to become an instructor, even more profound dedication is required. The study is equivalent to that required to obtain a professional degree.
Seikikai offers specialized clinics, seminars and workshops covering basic techniques such as rolls and break falls. Also offered are clinks and seminars that cover such subjects as: Sword Technique, Staff Technique, Ukemi, Ki Development, Avoidance, Advanced Aikido Technique and Techniques Based on Aikido. For example, many students have specific problems related to the art such as how to fall or how to do a break fall. In regular classes you always have the opportunity to practice the falls and rolls on your own. Moreover, the sensei can dedicate the better part of the class to some specific aspect of the art, however, the real purpose of the class is to teach general aikido. If we were to dedicate each class only to the basic aspects of the art, the classes would quickly become boring.
Do we teach the same technique in the regular classes that we teach in the seminars? No.
The regular classes are adjusted to an average of the students who attend. The teachers do everything possible in order to make the classes progressive, informative and entertaining but, in the clinics and seminars we try to truly elevate the level of all of the students in attendance. In these special classes we explore areas of technique and Aikido philosophy that can't be obtained in other martial arts schools or even in most schools of Aikido.
The clinics and seminars represent the greatest expenditure of time and effort in the search for the most profound aspects of this art.
The clinks are one more tool we use to analyze the specific applications of the techniques. Additionally, in some of the clinics and seminars you will learn about the historical development of the techniques of Aikido. Finally, we should mention that we usually go out to eat at a local restaurant after each session.
