GENERAL SEMINAR CATEGORIES INCLUDE:
WHY DO YOU DO AIKIDO? Is it for relaxation? Is it for self-defense? Is it because you like Japanese art and culture? Do you seek an advantage in business? Do you want to lose weight? Do you like the people involved? Do you like the philosophy? Is it a family affair?
Because we work out so hard in class, we are able to constructively relieve stress. Have you also noticed that at the end of a class you invariably feel much better than when you arrived? If you pursue a long-term study of Aikido you will find that your whole life can be so much more than you might now believe.
Overwhelmingly, our students claim that our classes are major stress-busters. This, in itself, is a major reason to make as many classes as possible. But, why go to the extra time and expense of attending the extra clinic that is offered almost every month of the year?
Basically, there are 3 kinds of learning: (1) visual, (2) auditory, and (3) kinesthetic (physical, implying motion). Every one of us learn, to a greater or lesser degree, using a combination of these three senses. In our culture, the first two are the most commonly recognized methods of learning. The third, kinesthetic, is equally important yet rarely recognized.
Ueshiba Sensei's teachings rely heavily on a philosophical understanding of the principles of aiki. But, a deep understanding of Aikido relies on action - doing the art.
In Seikikai classes, we learn by doing. Kinesthetic learning is the methodology used in our classes. Our students learn by direct experience. The advantage to this is that you actually learn to do Aikido. It becomes less a theoretical practice and more a real learning experience.
Aikido is more than simply a martial art. It is a way of life. But there is much to be learned. Aikido is an art that requires constant practice and reenforcement. It is not an art that you can learn in three easy lessons.
You can rest assured that the teaching that is imparted in the regular classes is complete and comprehensive. So, why should you consider making the extra effort to attend clinics and seminars?
There are many levels of Aikido, and there are many benefits to a consistent approach to Aikido. To master Aikido requires a singular dedication to its study and practice. To become a teacher can be as time-consuming and require as much study as it takes to become a doctor or lawyer.
Seikikai offers specialized clinics, workshops and seminars to teach basics like rolls and falls. Additionally, other clinics and seminars are regularly offered on such topics as:
Sword technique, Staff technique, Ukemi, Ki development, Riai, Cutting, Advanced Aikido technique, Basic Aikido technique
As an example, many students have problems with diverse aspects of the art, such as rolling and falling. In a regular class, you will always have the opportunity to practice falls and rolls. Additionally, the Sensei may dedicate most of one class to the practice of rolls and falls. But, the real purpose of the class is to teach Aikido technique. Indeed, if we only taught basics such as rolls and falls, the classes would soon become boring.
Don't we teach all of the clinic material in the regular classes? No.
Regular classes are adjusted to the average of the students in the class. We take great pains to make sure that the classes are progressive, educational, and entertaining. But, in the clinics, we get to soar! In the clinics we explore areas of Aikido technique and philosophy that you will not find in other Aikido schools.
The clinics and seminars represent major expenditure of time and effort in researching the most profound aspects of the art.
The clinics are one more way to see specific, practical applications of technique. Additionally, you learn in some clinics the historical underpinnings of Aikido technique. Finally, remember that we almost always go out to eat at a buffet after the clinics. RULES FOR TRAVEL TO OTHER LOCATIONS Host school or schools must provide:
